Botanist charged with charting the flora of the planet Hondrian for Outworld University. She encounters the Tenth Doctor sometime after Rose's departure when, traveling alone, he lands on the planet and finds himself suddenly in need of a guide to all the hostile plants suddenly surrounding him.
Kara is a part of Russell T. Davies' plan to suggest that the Tenth Doctor has a significant period of time travelling alone, yet finding "temporary companions" with whom to have one-off adventures. In other words, there's meant to be a gap between the televised episodes "Doomsday" and "Smith and Jones", and Kara meets the Doctor—sometime—in that gap.
Finding a precise chronology for the "not-Rose" companions will doubtless plague Doctor Who canon keepers for ages. There were three major sources of Doctor Who comics featuring the Tenth Doctor at the time of Rose's departure—Doctor Who Magazine, Doctor Who Adventures, and Battles in Time. Each of these publications chronicled a different place on the timeline, because each features a different temporary companion. DWM chose to feature the return of the Brigadier, DWA invented Kara McGravy, and BIT went with Jayne Kadett. There's no real narrative link between the three, nor any indication of how they fit with the televised "interim" companion, Donna Noble.
