Mal grew up in Hell's Corner, a tough slum district. The Titans first saw him when he protected his kid sister from young hoodlums who'd wrecked her lemonade stand. Later they befriended him and he proved he had the strength and wits to be a Teen Titans.

Although Mal possessed no super powers of his own, he briefly took on the costumed identities of Guardian (II, Teen Titans #44 & 49-53) and Hornblower (Teen Titans #45-49).

After the Crisis on Inifinte Earths, his heroic identities were reconned into the Herald (Secret Origins Annual #3).
