Firm medical and analytical skills.
Logic is sometimes overwhelmed by a desire for a boyfriend.
Martha Jones is a medical student when the Tenth Doctor first meets her. While an in-patient at the hospital, the Doctor and Martha — along with the rest of the building — are spirited away to the surface of the moon by the Judoon.
Following the successful return of the hospital to Earth, the recently Rose-less Doctor invites Martha for a single journey in the TARDIS, as a way of saying thanks for her help. The single journey turns into a whole series of adventures. Along the way, she falls in love with the Doctor. When she realizes he doesn't share those feelings for her, she chooses to leave the Doctor to return to her medical training.
Upon the successful completion of her training, she is offered a job as UNIT's medical officer — a decision that eventually leads her back in contact with the Doctor.
The question of first appearance is a somewhat open one with Martha. Did she debut in Doctor Who Magazine #381 or Doctor Who: Battles in Time #17? The truth is, you could probably say either and be correct, from a certain point of view. In terms of availability to the public, there's no question but that she was first available in Doctor Who Magazine #381. However, because of a delay in publishing that issue of DWM, both issues had the same cover date.
How can we say that, despite both issues having the same cover date, one clearly precede the other in shops? It has to do with the publication frequency of each magazine and the somewhat peculiarly British convention of dating magazines according to the last date on which they were the "current" issue.
DWM was a quad-weekly magazine; BIT, bi-weekly. Thus an issue dated 2 May would've first appeared in shops on 19 April and DWM would've appeared on 5 April.
Though briefly Torchwood's Chief Medical Officer on television, she has yet to be portrayed as such in comics. As of April 2008, she's exclusively been used in Doctor Who comics. Still, The Forgotten is told from the perspective of a UNIT-based Martha Jones, referencing events from as late as the fourth series finale.
