Control and his wife Dina had operated as a team of O.S.S. agents in NAZI-occupied France. After they sabotaged an ammunition depot, Control claimed he was innocent. Then he saw Dina led before a firing squad. A German officer told Control he would spare her life if Control told him all he knew about the guerrilla network in France. Obeying his duty to the O.S.S., Control denied knowing Dina, who was executed before his eyes. He was rescued the next day and taken to O.S.S. headquarters in London. There, because of his stoicism in allowing his wife to die rather then betraying O.S.S. secrets, he was given the job of "Control", as a man who could stand the strain of sending agents on dangerous missions that could lead to their death. But, despite Control's cold facade, he was heartbroken by Dina's death, and suffered inwardly whenever one of his agents was killed.
