Self-mobile, self-defending, self-recharging, K-9 is actually the most self-less companion that the Doctor has ever had. Various models have chosen to stay behind in completely alien environments just to protect various departing female companions of the Doctor. K-9 Mark I chose to remain on Gallifrey with Leela. K-9 Mark II chose to remain in E-Space (a sort of "negative dimension" with the Second Romana. K-9 Mark III chose to commit suicide to protect Sarah Jane and the Tenth Doctor. And the latest model, K-9 Mark IV, is currently defending the Earth by monitoring an artificial black hole from relatively close range.
K-9's laser is a tremendous drain upon his batteries. He can frequently be rendered temporarily entirely vulnerable by overusing them. He is also vulnerable to water, as his casing is not watertight. No model has yet been shown to have any levitational powers, so itis presumed that certain terrain, such as stairs, would be impassable for him.
The first appearance of this character may initially seem to be a bit odd. K-9 first showed up in Doctor Who Weekly at issue #12 in January of 1980. However, the genuine first appearance in a comic story was in the 1980 Dr Who Annual. The reason for this apparent conundrum is that British annuals have a cover year that's one greater than the year of publication. Hence the 1980 annual was actually available in 1979, thus pre-dating the story in DWW #12.
No attempt will be made in this database to differentiate the various models of K-9, in part because it would be tedious, but also because it would be impossible. The 1981 Dr Who Annual makes this especially tricky, as he's depicted in that story traveling with the Fourth Doctor and Adric—something which never happened on television.
