Powers: Mattie Franklin possesses the combined original abilities of the other Spider-Women. Thus she possesses superhuman strength, speed, reflexes, stamina and agility, the ability to cling to vertical surfaces, can sprout psionic spider-legs from her back, is able to fly, and possesses extrasensory powers, precognitive flashes, can generate psionic webbing, and has moderate telepathy.
Bio: Martha "Mattie" Franklin was a troubled youth who grew up with her father after her mother died when she was young.
She was granted her powers when, after overhearing a phone call between her father and Norman Osborn about the Gathering of the Five, she took her father's place during the Gathering and was endowed with the awesome powers that Norman Osborn had wanted for himself.
During Spider-Man's (one of many) temporary retirement, she wore an identical costume and filled in for him. After Spider-Man's return, she assumed the identity of Spider-Woman. Eventually Charlotte Witter, a villain also going by the name of Spider-Woman, attacked her and stole her powers. Powerless, Mattie continued to fight Witter and managed not only to reabsorb her own powers, but also to absorb the powers of both previous Spider-Women (which Witter had also stolen) and Witter's own powers.
With the blessing of Jessica Drew and Julia Carpenter, she resumed the Spider-Woman mantle.
Franklin eventually settled with her uncle, J. Jonah Jameson, and went through a seemingly-never ending series of costumes.
Mattie's routine was disrupted by her drug dealer boyfriend who began using and abusing Mattie to produce a drug called Mutant Growth Hormone, which, when taken, would give someone mutant powers for a short amount of time. While using her he kept her severely sedated. During one of her drunken stupors Mattie broke into private investigator Jessica Jones' apartment looking for Jessica Drew but quickly left when Jones confronted her. Doing a little detective work Jones, with the help of Jessica Drew, rescued Mattie and returned her to her uncle. Jessica Drew is now the current Spider-Woman.
Recently, in Wizard #181, preview art was shown for upcoming Marvel series The Loners, which included a female figure in a Spider-Man costume. Recently previewed interior art has confirmed that this character is indeed Mattie.
