Borsk Fey'lya

Search for 'Borsk Fey'lya' on Amazon

Bio:
A critical figure to the establishment of the New Republic, he was friendly to the advances of the dissatisfied Garm Bel Iblis, who had withdrawn from the Alliance soon after the Battle of Yavin. Bel Iblis would add his forces to those of the Bothans, commanded by Fey'lya. Soon, though, Bel Iblis found friendship with Fey'lya a tricky thing, complicated by the Bothan's politically manipulative ways.

One of the key points of dispute between them may have been the fact that, in truth, Fey'lya supported Mon Mothma (Bel Iblis' political rival), and was willing to sacrifice large numbers of his own people to gather information on the second Death Star for Mothma. Another bone of contention, especially after Fey'lya rejoined the Alliance, may have been the Bothan's unreasonable disdain for Admiral Ackbar.

Eventually, Fey'lya's support of Mothma proved useful, as he ascended to the summit of New Republic politics, succeeding Leia as Chief of State some 20-odd years after the Battle of Endor. Still, this was a kind of sea change for the New Republic, as Fey'lya definitely represented a different constituency from his predecessor. In particular, Fey'lya was deeply suspicious of the Jedi, and refused all attempts by Luke Skywalker to reform any sort of Jedi Council. When the invasion of the Yuuzhan Vong came (almost 30 years after Endor), he largely blamed the Jedi.

He died in the ensuing war, but not before asking Leia to inspire the troops. Perhaps, in his final moments, he did come to see the value of the Jedi after all.

Notes:
It is uncertain what position he held in the Old Republic, but he was probably too old not to have served that government in some way.

His appearances in comics have been limited mostly to adaptations of early 90s Zahn novels, largely because Dark Horse has abandoned that part of the Star Wars timeline.
