Ro Laren

Ro's a tricky one, from a continuity perspective. Officially--that is, according to Paramount--her last appearance in Star Trek was on The Next Generation, in which she's shown to resign her commission and join The Maquis.

However, the Pocket Books relaunch of Deep Space Nine--the so-called "Season 8" and beyond--bring her back into prominence. She is said to have been one of the few survivors of the final destruction of The Maquis. Cardassia Prime's devastation at the conclusion of the Dominion War is further posited to have changed the treaty relationship with the Federation in the Federation's favor, ultimately returning Federation worlds ceded to Cardassia back to the Federation. This effectively meant that the cause the Maquis were fighting for was eventually settled in the Maquis' favor. Their cause won, and their numbers very few, prosecution against The Maquis was largely suspended.

Moreover, Ro had fought against the Dominion in the war, albeit in a group of her own devising. When the war concluded, she returned home to Bajor, who had no legal issues against her, and was offered a commission in the Bajoran military, based on what they viewed as her career of good conscience.

She ended up on Deep Space Nine as Odo's replacement as Chief of Security. So long as she wore the somewhat protective uniform of the Bajoran military, she had little fear of being taken to a Federation court for her past crimes against them.

That changed, however, when Bajor finally joined the Federation, and the Bajoran Military was absorbed into Starfleet.

At this juncture she strongly considered fleeing to some safe harbor, but Captain Picard once again intervened on her behalf and noted that she would, in fact, be pardoned if she wished to resume her Starfleet commission. This she did, making her most current (2006) status that of Starfleet's chief of security on Deep Space Nine.

Wildstorm Comics chose to use the Pocket Books continuity of the character in some of their early 21st century Deep Space Nine work.

Her family name is Ro and her personal name is Laren according to Bajoran tradition.
