It's difficult to tell when reading the series in which she appears, but she was meant to be a "breakthrough" character in that she was a lesbian whose partner, Krissten, was also on board. Because the artwork surrounding their character never goes out of its way to suggest the two are involved in an intimate relationship, the only real clue the reader is left with is a line from another character who asks Etana, when Krissten is abducted, how she feels about the loss of her "mate". In context, though, this line can also be read in the British sense of "friend" or "pal".
