Barbara
Real Name: Barbara Wright
Search for 'Barbara' on Amazon

Bio:
As far as is known from the televised Doctor Who, she is one of the two original human companions of the Doctor. She was a science teacher at London's Coal Hill School. She suspected something amiss with their pupil, Susan, and tried to force a parent-teacher conference with Susan's grandfather. Susan's address on file with the school secretary led Barbara to a junkyard, so Barbara asked Ian to accompany her one night to see if Susan would indeed show up at this address.

She did.

Curious, the pair of teachers entered the junkyard shortly thereafter, and chanced upon the Doctor and his TARDIS. Once inside the machine, though, the Doctor refused to let them go, fearing that they would go back to the authorities, compromising the Doctor's life on Earth. So he essentially kidnapped the duo into traveling with he and his granddaughter.

She was, in general, a more willing traveler with the Doctor than Ian—perhaps because the Doctor offered her the chance to visit times she'd studied all her life. She frequently acted as the intermediary between the Doctor and Ian, and she is largely responsible for getting the earliest TARDIS crew to work together as a team. In fact, it is probably not inaccurate to say that Susan forced the Doctor to regard the humans on the TARDIS as equals. Certainly on television, she is the first human that received the Doctor's respect.
