Jor - El II (DC)(Earth-1)

In addition to being the father of Kal-El and the husband of Lara Lor-Van, he was also, of course, the most gifted scientist of his age.

Though he could have gone into many different disciplines, it was a job offer from General Zod which finally gave him focus. Leaving his home of Kandor after graduating from school, he went to Kryptonopolis to join Krypton's fledgling space program. Within minutes of arriving at the Space Center for his orientation, he saw Astronaut Cadet Lara Lor-Van, with whom he apparently instantly fell in love.

Because of a natural awkwardness around women, though, he did not talk to her for months after that first sighting. Instead, he threw himself into his work. His initial assignment was to find a "new, cheaper method of propulsion". This he accomplished within an amazingly short period of time. His solution was the discovery of "an atomic particle with anti-gravity properties". Once harnessed and replicated, he was able to infuse even ordinary objects with anti-gravity properties, making them much lighter, thus reducing the amount of fuel required for thrust. His invention had many applications not directly related to the space sciences. He famously created "anti-gravity belts" which allowed ordinary Kryptonians the power of flight, red sun be damned.

As revealed in The World of Krypton (1979), this character is most properly known as Jor-El II. His father, Kal-El's grandfather, was Jor-El I. Apparently, the overtly scientific Kryptonians of Earth-1's universe, prefer numerical succession to the appendices "Sr." and "Jr."
