Bio: The Ice Warriors are a lizard-like race, put forward as the inhabitants of Mars. At the time of their inception in the 1960s, the real-life Mars was still unexplored by any human probes. Thus, it was still a place that people could believe might house aliens. The theory advanced by early Doctor Who was that Mars might have had a similar evolution to Earth, except that there, dinosaurs and other reptiles never died out. Thus, a logical extension of this theory was that dinosaurs might have evolved into something like an intelligent warrior race, particularly adapted to Mars' colder-than-Earth climate. Their ambitions, generally, involve taking over the Earth for colonization, as Mars has become increasingly inhospitable to their life support needs. Aside from use in comics, Ice Warriors never made it out of the early seventies, probably because they're seen as rather too obviously "imaginary" in the light of real-life discoveries made about Mars in the latter half of that decade.
Notes: The Ice Warriors probably received more definition from comics than any other medium. The bulk of the run in Radio Times, in fact, is a kind of "palace intrigue" set right in the thick of Ice Warrior society. As depicted there by Gary Russell and Lee Sullivan, Ice Warriors are not at all dissimilar to Klingons in their attachment to ritual, honor, conquest and bloodlust.
