Undefined, but virtually limitless, use of what appeared to be magic. In truth, though, it was really that he was a completely normally-powered person in his own dimension. The reason his acts appeared magical in our dimension was that he wasn't bound by the physical laws of our dimension. Thus, Superman wasn't necessarily "vulnerable" to him, as he would be with a true magic user, but merely "annoyed" by having to continually clean up the messes Mxy left behind.
Could be sent back to the 5th dimension by tricking him into saying his name backwards. Could also be sent back "home" if he heard another character saying his name backwards, but this would transport the speaker, as well. After such transportation, he was compelled to remain in the 5th dimension for at least 90 days.
He also hated being ridiculed.
An imp from the fifth dimension who used the fact that he was from another dimension to confound the laws of nature in our dimension. In general, he would not be defined as "evil", but rather a practical joker, bored of his life back home.
Due to an error in 1958, the character's name was changed to Mr. "M-x-y-z-p-t-l-k". Later, it was revealed that this inadvertent name change was the dividing line between the Earth 2 and Earth 1 versions of the character.
This "Earth 2" Mxy was the one Bruce Timm generally used in his animated work in the late 20th/early 21st century, despite generally using Earth 1 (or, in some cases, post-Crisis) parts of Superman lore.
This version of the character appears to have returned during the events immediately preceding Infinite Crisis. In Greg Rucka's "Ruin" storyline in 2005, this is the version of Mxy that seems to have saved Superman's life by sacrificing his own. Oddly, though, the magic-dampening effects of Day of Vengeance were affecting this Mxy, who wasn't historically "magical", as such. Adventures of Superman (1987)
