Bio: Harold "Happy" Hogan got his famous oxymoronic nickname for his constant refusal to smile during his boxing days. During a stock-car race in which one of the participants was Tony Stark (Iron Man), Hogan rescued the playboy millionaire after his car was involved in a brutal collision. As a token of his gratitude, Stark hired the boxer as his personal chauffeur. Hogan soon fell in love with Stark's secretary Virginia "Pepper" Hogan and was constantly trying to get her to go out with him. Eventually she agreed and soon thereafter the couple married.
Hogan inadvertently was transformed not once, not twice, but three times into the monster known as the Freak. The first time was after an injury sustained during an incident with the Titanium Man. The second time was after exposure to cobalt rays when assisting Stark in building a new set of armor. The third time was after suffering injuries while filling in as Iron Man. (In the first and third instances, a Stark-designed device called an "Enervator" served as a catalyst for the transformation.) After the last instance of becoming the Freak, Pepper decided that being involved in Tony Stark's life was too dangerous for the couple, and they took an extended leave of absence.
Much later, Stark friend and confidante Jim "Rhodey" Rhodes called on Hogan (as one who had once worn the Iron Man armor) to assist him (and others who had at one time played Iron Man) against the giant robot Ultimo. The group proved successful against the threat (thanks to a late and timely arrival by Tony Stark in new armor), and afterwards Hogan wasn't heard from again until he invited Tony Stark to see one of his hot new boxing prospects in action. This prospect turned out to be none other than Spymaster, and Hogan amazingly beat him in a fight after the villain connived his way into the secret levels of Stark Enterprises.
Ironically, it was a new incarnation of Spymaster who grievously injured Hogan, leading to his hospitalization. Left on life-support Pepper begged Tony Stark, who could interface with the life-support machines using his Extremis-enhanced abilities, to pull the plug and stop Hogan’s suffering. At first Stark refused, but later decided to do it after the Invisible Woman convinced him.
