Mas Amedda

Bio:
Amedda was a master of the backroom political deal. In the waning years of the Old Republic, slightly before Palpatine was elected Chancellor, he was voted to the position of VIce Chair, a position sometimes called "Speaker of the Senate". Though essentially a kind of "VIce Chancellorship"—the Vice Chair maintained order in the Senate and performed the duties of the office of the Chancellor when the Chancellor was unavailable—the position was voted on separately from the Chancellorship. Thus, the VIce Chair often came from a party, or a faction, different from that of the Chancellor.

Such was definitely the case when Amedda first rose to the position. His support was drawn from the anti-Valorum camp in he Senate. Eventually, he was all too happy to control the procedures of the Senate in such a way that Chancellor Valorum came to appear particularly weak on the issue of the Trade Federation's invasion of Naboo. Valorum was ousted, but for reasons still unclear, Amedda did not apparently seek the post he'd helped to vacate. HIs ambition apparently ran only as high as the Vice Chair. When Palpatine won the ensuing election, Amedda stayed in place and quickly became a trusted confident of the incoming Chancellor. He would stay at that position, presumably until the Senate was dissolved just prior to the events of A New Hope.

What became of him then is decidedly unclear. DId he retire? Was his non-human DNA eventually a political liability in an increasingly racist Galactic Empire? Was he just outright killed? NO one particularly knows.

What is known is that his position was effectively subsumed into that of the office of the Grand Vizier—an office held by the very human Sate Pestage.
