Gretchen Talbott

Gretchen Talbott was a trapeze artist with a traveling circus. She ended up marrying a man, James Talbott, who joined up originally as a caretaker, but who worked his way up through hard work and practice to become an accomplished trapeze artist.

The two were in love and performed together on a nightly basis. Unfortunately, one night, Dr. Owen Wallach, whose mind has been transplanted into the body of Frankenstein's Monster, came into the circus arena. He was looking for a new body to house his mind so he wouldn't be trapped in the body of a monster. The crowd thought he was part of the show and loved it, but the performers knew better. Gretchen, who was in the middle of her performance with James, saw the monster down below and her concentration was broken. She missed the catch from James and fell to her death.

The character of Gretchen and her husband James, were only named by their first names during all of their appearances in Monsters Unleashed. In the Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe: Horror issue published in 2005, her husband's full name is revealed as James Talbott (during the entry for Frankenstein's Monster). Since Gretchen first appeared as married to James and only during flashbacks was she not married to him, the character has been entered also with the last name of Talbott as it was more common during the years in which those issues were published for a woman to take her husband's last name after marriage.
