Ted Sallis was a Ph.D. chemist working with Dr. Wilma Calvin's Project Gladiator, attempting to recreate the Super Soldier Serum that created Captain America, when he was betrayed to A.I.M. by his lover, Ellen Brandt. He injected himself with the only sample of the formula and drove into the swamp, expecting his newfound abilities would allow him to survive. Instead, they reacted violently to the swamp, and transformed him into the guardian of the Nexus of All Realities, as predicted centures ago by exiled Atlantean prophetess Zhered-Na.
Man-Thing, as he is called by the locals, has little more than vestiges of human intelligence, usually arising from spontaneous memories that arise from observations and his deep empathic nature, which is highly sensitive to the emotions of those around him, while having no emotions of his own. Violent emotions and evil cause him to become distressed, and fear, causing the most pain, causes him to secrete acid from his hands that can burn the source of the fear.
As the guardian of the Nexus, Man-Thing often dealt with beings attempting to escape from their home dimensions, incuding several bouts with Thog the Nether-Spawn. He also found himself de facto judge against would-be messiahs such as the Foolkiller and social conservatives such as Olivia Selby and Josefsen the Mad Viking, whose rage interfered with their reason.
Man-Thing, in spite of lacking emotion, has been made to feel fear by several beings, including D'Spayre, and a Celestial who temporarily destroyed him with his own fear. He regenerated in New York City using the body of a human being, from whom he was separated by Spider-Man, after which he was charged with the task of restoring the Nexus of All Realities, which had been shattered when the non-mutant heroes returned from the pocket universe.
To do this task, he was reunited with Ellen Brandt, who spent several years in an asylum and gave birth to a son, Job, who was left in custody of the Burke family. Trailed by a demon called Mr. Termineus, Man-Thing and Ellen retrieved Nexus pieces from Eric Payne, who had been in the same asylum with Brandt, Howard the Duck, Cleito, a goddess of ancient Atlantis, and a developing new world where they were fought by Silver Surfer.
Eventually, Ted, Ellen, and a being called K'Ad-mon, who was once the Biblical Adam, are merged with the Nexus and Man-Thing. K'Ad-mon later left the situation and returned Man-Thing to his usual self.
Most recently, he was on the Dark Avengers' hit list, but they were far from successful in killing him.

Most recently, he was on the Dark Avengers' hit list, but they were far from successful in killing him. He was captured and placed in a simulated environment aboard The Raft. Accused of several murders, the Feds wanted him destroyed. Henry Pym found a use for him by harnessing his connection to the Nexus of All Realities, making him transportation captain for the Thunderbolts. Dr. Pym was ready to do anything to keep such a unique life form alive.
