Originally a sneak thief, Dragon gained entry to private grounds outside Kyoto to steal a jade Buddha. However, he was stopped and humiliated by an old man and his young black martial arts student. Rendered helpless, Dragon accepted their invitation to stay and learn their art. Apparently, the sensei perceived a destiny of greatness in him.
Over the next seven years, Dragon became a master of martial arts and a close friend of Benjamin Turner, the sensei's other student. He also became a peaceful man who rejected violence and only used his skill if unavoidable.
Contacted by Barney Ling, chief of the espionage organization known as G.O.O.D., Dragon and Turner achieved in their first mission the fall of corrupt businessman Guano Cravat, who was trying to instigate war. Then, they founded a martial arts school in Manhattan. Even though they wanted only peace, adventures pursued them and they moved around the world using their skills for good and making many enemies in the way, particularly Cravat.
Cravat even talked Sandra Wu-San into believing that Richard Dragon had killed her sister. Looking for revenge, Sandra trained herself beyond limits to master martial arts so she could defeat Dragon. However, when the time came, Dragon managed to explain her that Cravat had lied. She no longer needed her extense martial knowledge, but Dragon made her try to explore the spiritual side of martial arts. Then, she decided she was Sandra no more and decided to call herself Shiva. She fought crime with Dragon and Ben Turner until Turner, brainwashed, became the renegade Bronze Tiger and Dragon decided to retire.
Dragon moved to the mountains to live there alone, but he still takes students occassionally.Dragon moved to the mountains to live there alone, but he still takes students occassionally.
