In the late '90s, this creator co-founded a local illustration studio in Milwaukee, WI and began self-publishing comic books. Switch was produced for Radio Comix's MANGAPHILE.
CREAM CITY COMICS is the name of Amado Rodriguez's publishing and an anthology series that has, as of 2002-2003, produced two volumes; Inkbot and Corrupted Data.
During this period, he produced featured pin-up artworks published in Jim Mahfood's GRRL SCOUTS: WORK SUCKS and other publications. He served as part of the design/animation team for (Beyond The Valley Of) THE MURDERDOLLS CD/DVD release.
In 2004, he teamed with other artists around the country in the form of ELEMENT X STUDIOS and was part of releasing the artbook entitled Element X Studios' ATOMIC, which was well received and found critical favor. Other works produced during this time period include a short story for indie Chicago Publisher, PULPO PRESS, and beginning work on the graphic novel version of Super Depressed Girl, based on illustrated novel work with Doug Paul. Six pages of this unreleased ogn can be found in Muscles & Fights.
ROZZY ALEXANDER STUDIOS, a prominent national/international costume and wardrobe designer, commissioned several Rodriguez-created pieces in 2005. These designs are featured in the BUSCH GARDENS Halloween amusement park attraction.
Most of 2006 was spent producing unreleased material for the Heavee Underground OGN, formulating what would become the Muscles & Fights ogn series and assisting in the organization of a local artists show for the Miwaukee Art Museum in coordination with the Masters Of American Comics exhibition.
2007 saw a return to self-publishing and release of MUSCLES & FIGHTS with Bud Burgy, Inc. Muscles & Fights was greeted with positive reviews from Newsarama, Ain't It Cool News and Bad Lit. Muscles & Fights 2: Musclier & Fightier was met with even stronger reviews.
Other works released in 2007 are; an afterword and spot illustration for Jennifer Young's DIARY OF AN APPRENTICE, a 4-page story in YOUNG AMERICAN COMICS' Small Town/Big City anthology, Cream City Comics: HEAVEE UNDERGROUND and volume 2 (Musclier & Fightier) in the three volume Muscles & Fights anthology series. And, as a member of the INTERNATIONAL CARTOONIST CONSPIRACY, took part in ALLEY CAT - an anthology dedicated to the memory of Eric 'The Vegan Ninja' Lappegard.
MKE and EXPRESSIONS magazines have featured the work of this artist in print and online.
Other ideas for more co-publishing ventures between Cream City Comics and Bud Burgy, Inc as well as the future of Super Depressed Girl are being explored.
Amado 'AREX' Rodriguez has recently added two more art community-related endeavors to his growing list of graphic storytelling projects. In December of 2007, he created the Cream City Comics blogspot which is dedicated to the promotion of graphic artists of varying exposure and disciplines. He will also work with A.W.E. in 2008, teaching pre-teens the fine art of graphic storytelling.
Muscles & Fights: Volume 3 (Muscliest & Fightiest) and Muscles & Frights (the Halloween edition of Muscles & Fights) have been officially announced for 2008 release. In addition, the work of AREX will be included in the special 20th anniversary Fallcon card set.
AREX is working with writer, Christopher Hoffland, on a colored comic book called Self-Made Scam. As of July 2008, it is as of yet unreleased.
In 2009 the Muscles & Fights series, Muscles & Frights, and Heavee Underground (the OGN featuring artwork by Alberto 'Ponbiki' Rios, Tim Irwin, Dave Crosland, Jim Mahfood and co-written with Bernie Gonzalez) became available at www.amazon.com.
Cream City Comics and Bud Burgy, Inc. (Meatfist & Gronk, Continuity Guy) are in discussions regarding a possible follow-up to the Muscles & Fights/Muscles & Frights series.
Arex is currently working on an SDG book set. The first tome of the series may see publication in 2010.
