Charles 'Chas' Addams began his artistic career drawing cartoons for his high school literary magazine. In 1932 he had his first cartoon published by The New Yorker and from 1938 until his death, his cartoons were a regular feature in the magazine.
The Addams Family, Addams' most famous creation, originated as recurring characters in his New Yorker cartoons. Television producer David Levy asked Addams to give the characters names and more defining characteristics and The Addams Family TV show was born. It ran from 1964-1966 and was refashioned in later years as a series of feature films, an animated series and a Broadway musical among other things.
Addams drew more than 1300 cartoons before passing away in 1988 and there are nearly a dozen anthologies collecting his work.
