Most commonly known for his contribution to indie horror books, Derek L. Chase began his career before leaving high school. At the age of 17, Derek produced a comic book for a local elementary school history class detailing major events in the American Colonies leading to the Boston Tea Party. It was the first in many steps Derek would take that year toward his eventual career in comics. It was just a short while later that he received a letter in the mail informing him of his acceptance to the Kubert School of Cartoon and Graphic Art(now known as The Kubert School), a school dedicated to the study and production of comic books.
In his first year, Derek gained the attention of Silent Nemesis Workshop and produced work for the online-exclusive “Dallas: The Gathering” series to garner interest in a revived Dallas TV series (a vision fulfilled in 2012). At the same time, Derek produced artwork for the Ultimate Zombie Hunter’s Handbook and took his first steps into the world of horror illustrations.
Following his stellar first year at the Kubert School, Derek’s second year saw his first writing assignments. While writing and illustrating articles for Clockwork Island (a now-defunct site dedicated to alternative culture), Derek continued his career in horror by joining Elevator Pitch Press in their “Great Zombies in History” anthology, a venture that would continue into Derek’s third year with Derek returning to illustrate an entry for “Aliens Among Us”.
Shortly after concluding work on Clockwork Island, Derek was contacted by JCE/GameKiss to write and illustrate “Freestyle” for their online street-based basketball game. Since then, his work has led Derek to running a printing and design department, producing logos and posters for a theater company, writing/illustrating creator owned stories, and working with Paul Di Filippo and Orion Zangara on a sci-fi epic, The Black Mill.
