Before entering the comics industry, LB Cole worked as art director in the lithography industry. His comic books career started in the early 1940's and his early work used basic, flat colors. He was known to refer the product of this as "poster color covers."
Over the course of his career Cole drew just about every genre available in the industry. An avid science fiction fan Cole was known for slipping in science fiction elements even when they weren't appropriate. Cited examples are rocket ships and ray guns appearing on the covers of Captain Flight and Contact Comics. Both titles were supposed to be devoted to contemporary aviation.
