Alex Jay was born and raised in a small city in southern Arizona. When his family moved to Casa Grande, he took his small collection of Fantastic Four comics along. It was in the sixth grade when Alex met another comics collector, Chip Goforth, who brought his Marvel comics for his class show-and-tell. In junior high school Alex met Mike Adams, another comics fan, who would go on to do work for DC and Marvel. In high school, Mike introduced Tony Salmons to Alex. Tony would go on to do work for a number of comics publishers. At Arizona State University, Alex majored in graphic design. He met another comics fan, Rusty Falk, in their lettering class. Rusty became an illustrator and did freelance work for Bruce Hamilton's publishing company, Another Rainbow. Currently, Rusty is an art director for a major airline.

Alex attended Phil Seuling's 1968 SCARP (Society for Comic Art Research and Preservation) Con in New York City over the 4th of July weekend. In 1970 he attended the New York Comic Art Con. In 1972 he was at the Phoenix Con. Alex attended the San Diego Comic-Con during the 1970s. At the 1977 Comic-Con he met Byron Preiss. Alex and artists Frank Cirocco, Brent Anderson, Gary Winnick and Tony Salmons showed their portfolios to Byron. Byron reviewed the work then asked who did the design work. Alex said he did the work and mentioned that he was moving to New York in the Fall. Byron gave his card to him and said to call him. During the convention, Byron gave an illustrated talk on his latest project, Empire by Samuel R. Delany and Howard Chaykin.

Alex moved to New York on October 1, 1977. He called Byron and got his first assignment, a logo for the Roger Zelazny story, The Furies. The logo appeared in the Baronet book, The Illustrated Roger Zelazny. That was the beginning of a nearly 25-year working relationship.

Alex is married and has a son. He currently resides in Brooklyn.

Date of Birth: 1953
Birthplace: Arizona
