Caplin was a comic strip writer best known for the soap opera strip The Heart of Juliet Jones (1953-2000), co-created with artist Stan Drake. He also co-created the strips Peter Scratch and Big Ben Bolt and served as writer for strips created by others, including Abbie and Slats, Long Sam, and Little Orphan Annie. He was the younger brother of Al Capp, the creator of the strip Li'l Abner.
