2008-09-27 11:14:22 DarthSkeptical Bio Jan Duursema is perhaps best known for her work on Dark Horse's Star Wars line of books. It is probably fair to say that she was the principle comic book artist working on the prequel era while the prequels were being filmed. As a result, some of her striking work--including, significantly, Jedis Quinlan Vos and Aayla Secura--actually influenced the production of those films. Aayla Secura, in particular, had a fairly visible presence in the films, including an especially poignant death scene--which she probably only warranted because of the strength of affection with which fans view Duursema's work.

Outside of Star Wars, Duursema has enjoyed notable employment at Marvel, where she's tended to work on the big, "mainstream" titles, like X-Men, Incredible Hulk, Spider-Man, and the like.

Duursema is married to comic artist Tom Mandrake.

2006-08-27 16:02:57 DarthSkeptical Notes With John Ostrander, co-created the significant Star Wars Expanded Universe characters of Quinlan Vos and Aayla Secura. Together, the duo also opened up a whole new section of the Star Wars timeline. In 2006, they were granted permission by LucasBooks to begin the Legacy Era, set some 130 years after the events of A New Hope. With John Ostrander, co-created the significant Star Wars Expanded Universe character, Aayla Secura. Though Quinlan Vos actually appeared in The Phantom Menace, it was her artist's eye who picked him out of the deep background and Ostrander's writing talent that brought him to new life alongside Secura.
