Marvel Premiere Classics / Eclipse & First Graphic Novels

Postby aaronmoish » Thu Apr 26, 2012 5:36 am

I've noticed Marvel Premiere Classics (2006) has its own title entry, but is it really necessary? Only the direct market editions have unifying volume numbers and most (if not all) have entries under the titles the volumes collect or their own individual titles. Anyone else think it would be better to merge these books with the versions under their parent titles, with a note of the Marvel Premiere Classic volume number on the direct editions, and a user list of all volumes instead of having duplicate entries? Maybe do the same with Marvel Masterworks (1997)?

I've brought this up in the past, but don't recall ever receiving a response. At least one other member has as well. My original comment from 2008:

I don't know if this is common with every book in the "Marvel Premiere Classic" series, but in the two examples I have at hand, there is no mention of MPC in the indicia.

In fact, there isn't any mention of MPC anywhere in the books themselves. It only appears as a logo on the back cover of the dust jacket of the standard edition, and on the spine and back cover copy of the dust jacket of the limited direct market edition. The series # only appears on the spine and back cover of the limited direct market edition.

It would be more appropriate to note the MPC series # in the notes field for the individual titles in the database, and/or create a public user list.

I'm in favor of merging and/or moving the volumes to their appropriate titles, but it should be debated. Instead of creating a user list to identify the volumes, which only the creator of the list could edit, I'd suggest creating a list to put in the title notes of Marvel Premiere Classics (2006) similar to the ones for Eclipse Graphic Novels (1986) & First Comics Graphic Novel (1984):
http://www.comicbookdb.com/title.php?ID=14553
http://www.comicbookdb.com/title.php?ID=14964

What do others think?

Marvel Masterworks (1997) is a different case, I think. It's a series of its own, and is titled so in the indicia .

I'm in favor of merging/moving because I find it rather confusing the way it is now.
A list like the one for the "Eclipse" and "First" graphic novels would be perfect as well.

The Eclipse/First-type list sounds good to me! Definitely a better solution than the duplicate entries.
(Looks like there are still a few Eclipse Graphic Novels & First Comics Graphic Novels that need to be moved...)

When I made those two lists, I didn't move the handful of issues that were indexed under those two titles because some of the graphic novels actually are numbered and some may or may not have the title "XXX Graphic Novel:..." in the indicia, and could therefore be the correct place to index them. But, I did a lot of research and I couldn't find any definitive data for which books had those references, except for the ones I had physical access to myself. So, I left them where they were barring new information, and made links to the issues in the title notes regardless of them being listed under that same title.

But back to the topic at hand. I've seen a couple of the MPC hardcovers' cover designs on softcover collection reissues, but I haven't bothered to note whether the paperback re-releases are branded Marvel Premiere Classics as well. Can anyone clarify?

Okay, then I can contribute at least something to the TMNT volumes:

Vol. 1: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles First Graphic Novel Number Nine (still up until my 5th printing)
Vol. 2: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Book II First Graphic Novel Number Ten (still up until my 3rd printing)
Vol. 3: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Book III (in my 3rd printing)
Vol. 4: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Book IV (1st printing)

Thus I'm not sure if it would make sense to have Books I and II moved to the First Graphic Novel sections and Books III and IV remain at the TMNT (1984) entry, because somebody WON'T get it and add the missing two volumes again.

I had forgotten: I have First Graphic Novel #23, and the indicia title is American Flagg!: State of the Union, and so should go under American Flagg! (1983) as TPB vol. 03 1st ed. or GN vol. 03 (I'd go with GN vol. 03 to try and avoid confusion). I'd guess that the indica titles for the other two American Flagg! volumes would reflect the title and not First Graphic Novel, but its just a guess.

The Marvel Premiere Classics line has been moved/merged with their appropriate titles and I've made a list for the series at the old title:
http://www.comicbookdb.com/title.php?ID=21496

The majority of the books have little to no credits listed (shame on the original indexers), but that's a task for another time. I decided to lock the title to prevent new volumes from being indexed under the title. So, only the mods can edit the list now, so I'll try to keep it updated in a timely fashion. I still need to upload a few covers, and double check my links. But I need to rest my eyes for awhile!
