Foreign comics - identify nationality

Postby culwin » Wed Jul 06, 2011 1:24 am

Hi,

First of all, I discovered this site about a month ago and I love it.
It has been invaluable for my research in trying to collect all appearances of some of my favorite characters.
I've also had a good time contributing (hope I didn't make any mistakes).

Anyhow, one thing has been bugging me.
There are many titles here that are not American, or titles that were printed later (or even at the same time) in another country.
It is confusing to see a character having appeared in "X-Men", for example, only to discover that it is referring to the same issue of "X-Men" that was published 5 years earlier in America.
I'm sure it is confusing for people outside the USA too, when they try to look up their version of Spider-Man, and try to separate it from the American Spider-Man.
It is especially confusing to see these in the Chronological Listings.
I fully support having comics of other countries here (I love all my Captain Britain comics!), but here is what I suggest:
Have a field for the "Nation of Origin", if other than USA. You could even have a little flag next to the title, indicating what country it is from.
That would be awesome, and I'm sure the readers from outside the USA would appreciate it to.

Thanks!

I do belive the site has that kind of field associated to each Tittle, as well as language. But I don't think it's used anywhere yet.

Something I've seen beeing done is adding the country at the end of the tittle. For example "Spawn (Finland)" or "Spawn (Finnish)". I've been starting to do this whenever there's a chanse for confusion, because I think it's just polite.

You really do not need to put the country in the title. The publisher should be enough to tell the difference between countries.

... if you're doing a search (and even then it's a bit bothersome way). In other listings, where the publisher isn't visible, the difference is often only in publication years. Take a look at this page of Todd McFarlane. See how easy it is to distinguish which one is the Finnish publication? Even the fact that such publication excists and is in the database can be seen in a glance.

There maybe a need for a flag symbol at some point, but adding the name of the country in the title is unnecessary and is generally not encouraged.
