From Newbery award winner and acclaimed writer of children’s books, Avi’s story of the “City of Light, City of Dark” is the narrative of a boy’s struggle with right and wrong, the sins of a father, and the bitterness of a forgotten old man. The two children Carlos and Sarah are entrusted with the task of returning a special subway token which contains the Power to keep NYC from freezing and to keep a mythic group of subterranean creatures at bay. Mr. Underton, the bitter old blind man is on a journey to be recognized as a powerful genius whose plans necessitate possession of the powerful token. Sarah’s mother is the guardian of the token who has been estranged from her daughter and is on a search for both the token and Sarah. Her father, Mr. Stubbs, who stole away with Sarah in the middle of the night when she was a baby, is caught between doing the right thing or obeying Mr. Underton, his former boss. All these characters are caught in a whirlwind of action as the coin changes from hand to hand and the clock ticks down towards the doom of the city.
