In the present, the Aram haunted estate has been turned into a resort hotel. One night, a guest is killed by a ghost on the nearby beach. An antiquarian named Stephen Carew says that the ghost is very real.
Guests John and Sylvia follow the ghost and discover it is Stephen Carew in disguise. He says he is the last of the Aram's and couldn't stand seeing the estate become an obscene hotel. Before he can shoot them, a real ghost strangles him from behind.
John reveals to Sylvia that one of his ancestors was killed by an Aram long ago, and perhaps the ghost's vengeance is now satisfied.
