Mr. Kline War

Letters Column: Sock it to Shell-Head

Slasher prepares a bomb in Washington DC while his partner Demetrius frets over the visions he has had of the future. Just as Tony and Marianne arrive in Washington, Slasher and Demetrius activate the detonator and the Federal Securities Complex begins to crumble. Iron Man helps to evacuate the building. Slasher and Demetrius report to Mr. Kline about their mission's success, but Kline informs them that Iron Man saved their intended victims; their new assignment is to destroy Iron Man. Later, Tony attends a Senate assembly gathered by Senator Byrd, who has declined to reveal its purpose. Also present is Ben Crandal, an old friend of Tony's. The senator shows the two men images of their buildings and weapons falling apart, including the Federal Securities Complex, which was one of Crandal's buildings. Elsewhere, Marianne has an ESP vision of Tony lying dead in Iron Man's arms. Slasher and Demetrius target the US Capitol and the building begins to fall apart. Tony becomes Iron Man to remove the sonic bomb, then tracks down Slasher and Demetrius and tackles them. Demetrius transforms into a giant, inhuman creature. Elsewhere, Mr. Kline communicates with his own mysterious superior. Iron Man and Demetrius fight until Marianne arrives. Terrified at the presence of a mind greater than his, Demetrius reverts to normal, his other appearance only an illusion. Iron Man bests the Slasher while Demetrius crumbles to the ground, ranting. Marianne collapses in Iron Man's arms and murmurs "Tony...?"
