Synopsis:
After being transported to Earth via Dr. Mark Erdel's "robot brain", J'onn J'onzz asks to go home. Erdel explains that complying with the Martian's request won't be easy...or fast. He estimates it will take "years" to send him back. Still, he's willing. Unfortunately, it's at this moment that J'onn decides to display his shapeshifting abilities. The shock of seeing J'onn change into a human literally gives the Doctor a heart attack, forever trapping the Martian on Earth. Resigned to his fate, J'onn travels all over his new home planet, then decides to become John Jones, a rookie precinct detective with a local police department.

Notes:
Given what we know of J'onn's technical prowess today, this origin seems particularly out of date. Indeed, it's been largely retconned, in favor of portraying the Manhunter as the last of a doomed race, rather than the victim of a scientific experiment.
