Guilt-ridden, Ulic Qel-Droma hides from his past on the frozen world of Rhen Var. Meanwhile, on Exis station, Nomi Sunrider calls together the Jedi Knights to discuss the future of the Republic. After hearing so much about Ulic and remembering him from her childhood, Vima Sunrider decides to go in search of him. Her mother, Nomi, busy with her role as the de-facto leader of the Jedi, has largely neglected Vima, and she hungers for both further Jedi training and a strong male role model. Both of these, she hopes, will be present in Ulic. After all, despite what may have become of Ulic, in her youth she remembers him as her mother's lover and the closest thing she had to a father.
Thus, she steals away on Hoggon's ship. When Hoggon discovers Vima on his ship, he also finds out something interesting about one of his other passengers. He is astounded to learn that the mysterious stranger he took to Rhen Var is in fact Ulic himself.
