This is a version of the following issue:
Star Wars: Dark Empire (1991) #1 - The Destiny of a Jedi
Story Arc(s): Add/remove story arcs to this issue
Somewhat historic issue in the annals of Star Wars comics in that it was the very first issue published after the demise of Marvel's license with Lucas. At publication, It had been almost five years since any new Star Wars material had been seen. (For those keeping score, the last issue of original material was the conclusion of Marvel's kiddie series, Ewoks.)
It is contemporaneous with Timothy Zahn's Heir to Empire novel, which did for novels what this series did for comics. Together, they were the start of a whole new era in The Expanded Universe, in which a serious attempt was made to go beyond the scope of the films, in the only direction Lucas would then allow: post-Return of the Jedi.
In addition to the story itself, this issue also contains a 4-page explanation of what had happened between the end of ROTJ and the opening scene of this issue. Unfortunately, the pages of this intro were printed out of order, with pages 2 and 3 being reversed.
