The Doctor solves the problem of the "growing quantum bookworms" from the end of Part One by reversing the energy flow on the librarians' weapons, thereby drawing all the energy out of the closest bookworm, killing it.

Now that the the worms are less of an immediate threat, the Doctor has time to consider more fully what's going on. He determines that the bookworms are physical manifestations of chaos, being attracted to the energy emanating from the library's new filing system. The permanent solution to the problem is to make hard copies of the entire database and shut down the new filing system.
