A random class of 9th graders have been chosen for the 'program.' They must now kill each other until the final winner is decided. In protest, it's up to Shuuya to gather a group to fight back and deliver a counter-punch to the government that ruined their lives. But they must be careful, for there are those among them who have decided to try to 'win' this cruel game.

Reprinted/Collected in:
Battle Royale (2003) Ultimate Edition vol. 01

Takako Maeda and Tomo Iwo are credited with translation. Keith Giffen rewrote/adapted the translation.

It's interesting to note that the name of the "teacher" who acts as supervisor to The Program changes in each incarnation of the story. In the film, he is known as Kitano, in the manga, his name is given as Yonemi Kamon, and in the novel, his name is Kinpatsu Sakamochi.
