Issue Tagline: The Lethal Lizards From below!

Format: Color; Standard Comic Issue; 32 pages

Story Arc(s):    Add/remove story arcs to this issue

Carol Danvers is modeling her new costume in front of her mirror when Frank Gianelli knocks on her door, notifying her that Sharon Cole, the reporter she sent to New Mexico, has disappeared. A few days later, Carol is contacted by authorities in New Mexico who have intercepted a cryptic distress call from Sharon and she immediately flies out to search for her.

Meeting Police Sergeant Jim Whitmore, Carol first hears a frantic message in which Sharon seems terrified of something chasing her and then has an unpleasant encounter with Army Colonel Harry Butler, who wants her to stay out of the investigation. Carol and Whitmore go out anyway, and spend all day searching the desert until dark when, in the hills, they locate a trashed armored column that Butler had called in from the nearby Fort Stark. All of the soldiers have vanished. Moments later, as Carol finds a very large footprint, Whitmore disappears and Carol turns into Ms. Marvel. She is suddenly confronted by a large dinosaurian lizard that speaks English and calls her an enemy, and she impulsively attacks it. Though she manages to defeat it, other lizard creatures appear. She tries talking to them, but they make clear that she cannot be allowed to return to civilization having seen them.

Ms. Marvel defeats these other lizards as well, and then the lizards’ High Council steps in. Their leader, Aracht’yr, seems wise and genuinely sorry that his people and Ms. Marvel’s are destined to be enemies, but still commands a Council member named Haemon to attack her, which he does using some sort of telepathic ability. Knocked unconscious in seconds, Ms. Marvel is picked up by the lizards and carried underground before the sun rises.
