Following the rebuilding of the Xavier institute for higher learning, a new team of X-Men assemble under the leadership of Havok, including Iceman, Polaris, Rogue, Gambit, Wolverine and Juggernaut. At the same time, new students are arriving at the school, among them is Jay Guthrie (Icarus) brother of Cannonball and Husk.
As Jay settles into his new school with his new friend and roommate Sammy Pare (Squidboy), the X-Men travel to China to investigate a mutant signature detected by cerebra and that accompanied by a strange disturbance in earth's magnetic fields. They discover that a catastrophe of apocalyptic proportions had swept the area around this new mutant, and that the mutant himself is a man who closely resembles their old teammate Xorn, who had recently been revealed to be the X-Men's arch-foe, Magneto.
