Madame Rouge and Monsiuer Mallah show up at Doom Patrol headquarters proposing a truce. Garguax is in the employ of Zarox-13, who plans to destroy Earth as part of a plot against neighboring worlds in his own galaxy. Brain is siding wiht him just to learn more, but the Brotherhood must ally themselves with the Doom Patrol or they will be destroyed as well.

While at Doom Patrol HQ, Dr. Caulder hypnotizes Madame Rouge and learns her origin. She was a popular actress named Laura DeMille who became bipolar (actually labeled erroneously in the issue as schizophrenia/split personality) who consented to brain surgery from Monsieur Mallah that had the opposite effect she was told.

Madame Rouge is disappointed by Dr. Caulder's apparent lack of interest in romance, but the combined forces of the DP and the Brotherhood send Zarox-13 back to space.

Mark Logan is considered the best diagnostician in his medical program, but rather than be an internist in a family practice, he prefers to do biochemistry research in Africa. After selling the rights to a new large-scale medical device, he uses his earnings to go there with his wife, Marie, and son, Garfield. He supplements his research with medical practice, healing the local King Tawaba using penicillin. When Gar causes trouble in the lab, Marie keeps him away, and fails to alert her husband after five days in which Mark has a deadly fever that only an African green monkey can survive. Using a machine that can de-evolve people, and using Gar's certain death as a stimulus, he uses the machine on him. After 24 hours as a monkey, the fever heals and Gar returns to normal, except that his skin and hair remain green. When Marie is attacked by a mamba, Gar spontaneously turns into a mongoose and kills it. He can now turn into any animal he can think of. In a severe flood, Mark and Marie are thrown off a waterfall, but Mark's parting wish is for Gar to transform himself into an eagle and fly to King Tawaba. Tawaba wished to make Gar a prince, but when Gar balks at education and wants to become a jungle boy, he relents easily. Little does Tawaba know that his witch doctor wants to kill Gar and Nicholas Galtry wants to take Gar away...
