Fleisher was not the editor at First Comics. Rather, she was the editor at Putnam-Berkley, the publishing house representing the original source material—a novel of the same name by Harold Coyle. Nevertheless, she appears to have had some significant editorial control over the comic book. According to Dave Drake it was she, and not someone from First Comics, who hired him. And, indeed, copyright on the books is retained by Putnam-Berkley, not First.

Dave Drake's position on the comic book was thus more of adaptor than full-on writer. That said, he claims to have made significant changes to the book, especially as regards descriptions of being in a war zone.
