Synopsis: Boy's parents never gave him a name and treat him like an animal because he was born mute. His father is accosted by the sheriff and told that he killed his boss Mr. Parsons, so he blamed it on Boy, who arrived home late and scared. Boy runs away, but the cowbell around his neck keeps them on his tail.
Boy runs into town where he chases Ezra Lawson and the schoolteacher, Miss Amy, points out that Boy has a heightened sense of smell that allowed him to recognize Ezra in the dark. Boy's parents vow to give him a name at church on Sunday.
