Jake and Beth go to see Dan and Kate, but things don't seem right. The hospital is keeping quiet, and Dan needs Jake's help to find out what's going on. Jake tries to patch things up with Dan, but he won't listen. Sid heads up to The Casino, while Jake discovers that what's killing his ex-wife is a synthetic viral epidemic that's spreading across San Francisco. Sid is discovered by a reporter--a longtime acquaintance--who offers to give Sid a little more info. Beth speculates that the virus may have been created by Chesterton and his three colleagues who've been killed. Sid and Natalie arrive at The Casino, and look up one of her informants, only to find him dead. Beth gets the name of a lone living coworker of Chesterton's, and Jake sets out to find him in the ruins of the Tenderloin district. Belarski informs Jake that he knows the antidote to the virus, just before receiving a vicious laz-gun blast in the back. Belarski's dead, and Jake's back at square one.
