On a visit to Chief Buto, Korak catches M'tugu the witchdoctor putting poison into the chief's food. M'tugu avoids capture and later that night steals away with Buto's son Amadi. Korak, Nkima and Buto trail him into the jungle; finally the trail becomes so hard that Korak sends Buto back and takes to the trees. M'tugu sees Korak following him and uses a mirror to shine sun into the son of Tarzan's eyes and hypnotize him into thinking that a giant eagle or bat is flying down upon him. Later Korak comes upon the Valley of Shadows, where a giant stone sphinx with the head of a baboon and the body of a lion is worshipped as Thoth. Korak sends Nkima back for Buto. Korak watches as strange Egyptian priests with tamed baboons instruct black tribesmen to bring offerings to an assembly that night. Korak waits until dark and then begins to descend a cliff behind the sphinx to search for Amadi. He sees that the followers have gathered before the sphinx, which is built over a volcanic vent and made to appear to spout fire and steam from its facial openings. Korak slips and causes a landslide that dams a moat around the back of the sphinx. He hurries into the temple as the water rapidly floods the building. He comes upon M'tugu and grabs him from behind, but M'tugu makes him think he is holding a giant snake. The illusion passes, and M'tugu takes him to the room where Amadi is chained, guarded by two baboons. As they are leaving, M'tugu makes a break, and sicks the baboons on Korak. But the mandrills are becoming alarmed by the rising water and allow Korak and Amadi to escape. They climb back up the cliff and flee into the jungle. When the water fills the volcanic vents in the sphinx, the entire Valley of Shadows is incinerated in a massive explosion. Rocks are hurled for miles and one knocks Korak out. A pack of hyenas attack Amadi and the prone Korak, but at the last minute Buto arrives and showers the hyenas with spears.
