Sunderland gave the village chemicals that caused the animals and children to mutate. When Sunderland sends forces against the village, Swamp Thing nearly becomes drunk with power from soil filled with his dead believers, but instead sends the paperwork on "Project: Cornucopia" to Clark Kent at the Daily Planet, instead.
