Shade awakes from his coma, but lapses in and out of consciousness, telling President Olon and Dr. Sagan the story of how he obtained the Miraco vest after Ezak and Oga stole it at the behest of Sude. He finds the vest and is complled to put it on, and finds an apartment on the Earth-Zone that connects with the Zero-Zone, where Xexlo threatens him with death should he ever return, judging any who enter the Zero-Zone murderers. Following leads from a junior security officer named Rega, he desicovers a vast conspiracy of government higher-ups. Meanwhile, Dr. Z. Z. attacks Leno and demonstrates a limited ability to restore is old face for short periods.
