Rather than typical the male-dominated super-hero genre most publishers relied on, CrossGen branched out into a wide variety of genres. CrossGen innovated and grew at a phenomenal rate. In 2003, a scandal involving freelancer payments blew up, nearly destroying CrossGen. By 2004, the company had filed for bankruptcy. In November of 2004 the Walt Disney Corp purchased the rights to most of CrossGen.
