    Reviews - Dark Reign: The Sinister Spider-Man - #4

View this issue

Review of the whole miniseries. - Uthor
Since this is the last issue of the Sinister Spider-Man miniseries, I'm going to give my thoughts on the series as a whole.

It follows Venom, er, Spider-Man, has he exacts his revenge on J. Jonah Jameson, who he blames for turning him towards a life of crime. He does this by turning JJJ's life into hell through gang warfare and dead strippers. Osborn barely has any control over his actions. The Redeemer blames Spider-Man for the problem with all the villains in the city and wishes to exact payback. It all culminates with a cluster-fuck of a battle between Spider-Man and Bullseye, Daken, The Redeemer's crew, the police, and JJJ where Spider-Man escapes with little more than a dog in his left eye.

The series is written for to be funny between Spider-Man's dark humor and warped sense of payback, JJJ's frustration, and The Redeemer's idea of "justice". Brian Reed hits most of the marks on this front. Not surprisingly, no lasting consequences come out of the story. The only part the writing kinda falls apart on is the ending. It's a comedy of errors where nothing goes according to plan, yet works out well for almost everybody. It's a little random for a plot where everyone has meticulous plans, though I see where Reed was trying to go with it.

This book really shines on Chris Bachalo's art. He's had some memorable runs on Amazing Spider-Man and applies what he learned about dynamic drawing very well here. On top of the acrobatic poses that his art style works well with, Sinister Spider-Man allows him to exaggerate "Venom's" features through his shape shifting power. He also adds tons of little details and double-takes that add to the humor.

This is nothing necessary to understanding the Marvel universe, but it's an amusing diversion. The humor is top notch and the art is beautiful.
