If you were ever a reader of the Star Wars Expanded Universe - this book is for you. - MartyPrime
It had been eons since I read the pervious Crimson Empire books (not even sure I read the last one) so I might not have been up to speed on what was going on - but everything felt very familiar. First off the Dave Dorman cover was spectacular and reminded me of the “classic” covers from the 90s that really laid down the expanded universe. But moving inside … the art was a little stiff at first but as the story progressed it seemed to pick up some real energy especially with the character’s faces. The whole experience of reading this book felt like a bit of a home coming … I used to be heavily invested in the Star Wars Expanded Universe - to the point where I knew where every book fell in the time line, but after NJO I sort of fell out of it. I guess it got too bogged down for me there were so many secondary characters who were seldom used and the main cast seemed to be over used and of course continuity mistakes kept creeping in with the addition of the new films. However this book reminded me what I loved about the EU … there is such a rich tapestry there and Mike Richardson took full advantage of it. Seeing the Solo kids alive and still young was great and I had forgotten about Vima-Da-Boda but she brought me back to time when the only new Star Wars we had was Dark Empire and the Thrawn trilogy. Everything about this story was comfortable and that may not sound like a raving review but when I pick up a book set in a 30+ year old continuity … that’s what I’m looking for. I’m glad I made the call to pick up this book and am looking forward to reading the rest.
