... dark, twisted and sinister ... - MartyPrime
I don’t think the series ended as strongly as it started. Don’t get me wrong I still loved this series - Gregg Hurwitz did an amazing job of setting a very dark, twisted and sinister tone for the story – even at some points surpassing Burton’s Batman Returns. Hurwitz story was equally complimented by Sztmon Kudranski’s moody art, the book is beautiful … there is no doubt about that, but around the second part of this issue things got … “complicated”. The final fate of Cassandra was a little confusing … perhaps it was meant to be ambiguous – but I didn’t think it had the emotional impact that it should have. Batman was more or less not needed to make this story work but his appearance helps tie the Penguin to the larger DCU and I hope to see more of this character in future stories … preferably written by Hurwitz. Even if I didn’t think this particular issue was the best of the bunch … his take on the character is great, he brings so much more depth than normally is granted the Penguin. I look forward to seeing where Hurwitz and Kudranski turn up next.
