This group is not the second to bear the name, chronologically, but the second to really get any significant number of appearances. The original group had been shown to collapse under its own weight, with two new Societies rising from the ashes. But these new branches wouldn't really bear fruit in the form of comic pages until the events following Identity Crisis.
Between the original and 21st century Societies, there was this one, headed by the Ultra-Humanite. They took on both the JSA and the JLA, and their ranks were much thinner. Indeed, there's little commonality between this group and the other two.
