Bio:
With the George Pérez reboot of Wonder Woman in 1987, Paradise Island got a new name: Themyscira. But the name, oddly, does not apply to just Paradise Island, but rather more generally, "the home of the Amazons". Amazons, in the Pérez revamp, are a divided people, at times even a diaspora, concerned with finding some final unity. Originally, Themyscira was a walled city on a mainland, possibly Africa. This wall was breached, and the tribe was split. Hippolyta's faction found favor with the gods and were spirited away to an island, which they renamed Themyscira. After many millennia of living on this island, it was eventually transformed into the oasis of art and learning that we recognize from the Golden Age as "Paradise Island". Over time, the "lost" half of the Amazons--that part not led by Hippolyta--was found, and they were brought to Paradise Island. Unfortunately, they were settled on the least-fertile areas of the island, a fact which, in part, set the stage for an eventual conflict between the two factions. Before that simmering pot came boiled over, however, Brainiac-13 unleashed a diabolical plan on the Earth whose only solution was for Hippolyta to sacrifice Paradise Island. The gods rewarded their act of selflessness by giving them a new Themyscira in the form of a chain of small islands above the Bermuda Triangle. Interestingly, this act of sacrifice did not just attract the attention of the gods. In saving the world by losing everything, the Amazons had attracted the attention of the entire world. Thus, the new (present) Themyscira is now much more open to visitors than it ever has been before. It serves as a base of learning to scholars of all races. Diana's role as Ambassador to the UN, and her frequent appearance in the media continues to bring attention to the Amazon's "secret" base in a way that significantly defies the description of Paradise Island given so long ago in All Star Comics #8. Complicating matters still further in the most recent issues of Wonder Woman are two major developments. A Civil War between the two factions of Amazon finally broke out, mostly questioning Hippolyta's fitness to command since she was increasingly absent as "the time-traveling Wonder Woman of the past". Whether Themyscira should continue to be a monarchy is a major issue amongst its citizens, and Diana has appeared lately stripped of her title. Indeed, the external view of Themyscira has grown suspicious over this point, too, with Diana facing tension in the US over trying to give advice to the US when she doesn't even come from a democracy. To make matters worse for Diana, politically, Hera mad at her adulterous husband (who spent far too much time sleeping with Amazons, apparently), recently moved Themyscira inside US territorial waters. Thus there is currently a question of whether the Amazons even HAVE a claim to sovereignty (and, obviously, whether Diana still has a job at the UN).
Are they a super group, or are they a political group? That's a question best left for philosophers. But until we see some really "ordinary" Amazons, I guess we'll give 'em the benefit of the doubt as being all "touched by the gods".
